Urban Glitz

Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical GatheringsWe’re sharing a fabulous wedding with you today.  It’s a bit of a throwback!  This Whimsical Gatherings wedding was the very first wedding held at The Standard in downtown Knoxville back in 2012, prior to renovations being 100% completed.  The urban atmosphere of the venue combined with this bride’s unique style, made for an amazing celebration.  From the Diane von Furstenburg dress enhanced by Colleen at White Orchid Bridal to the food by Holly’s Eventful Dining, everything was flawlessly planned and coordinated by Alison Events and photographed by John Black Photography.  We were honored to create the floral arrangements for this couple.  We loved the long tables and surprising pops of color, texture, and pattern.  The bride, Laura, who also runs Mockingbird Events, knew how to incorporate the most unexpected details on her special day.  In fact, to read a great Q&A article about how Laura went about planning her most special event, go here.   Photos by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical GatheringsPhoto by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical GatheringsPhoto by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by John Black Photography, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings

A Classic Cherokee Wedding

Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings, Styling & Design by Jennifer LaraiaWhat an impeccable wedding!  It was an absolute joy to work with such a talented group of professionals at Cherokee Country Club again.  The Whimsical Gatherings team worked tirelessly to get every refined detail of this event perfect with our dear friend Jennifer Laraia who created the design concept with the bride, sourced the 20 foot trees, and styled the entry and cocktail hour lounge.  Nothing went overlooked for this couple!  We were onsite day one to place dozens of candles and make way for installation of the ballroom framing trees.  Then day two had Colby on a ladder placing white blooms into the trees, Carrie tying garlands onto the bride & groom chairs, and Leah inserting fresh lavender into our floral designs and making sure everything was executed as planned.  As you will see below, The Happy Envelope created a beautiful invitation suite & custom map for the couple, Bangs and Blush came to enhance an already beautiful bride, Magpies Bakery delivered an elegant cake, Ogle Entertainment and Light Design added patterned uplighting to the room, and Campbell Tent & Party Rentals installed the fabric entrance draping.  Coordinating escort & place cards by Kalligraphia and hand-lettered signage by Paperfinger were used to enhance the look as well.  The A-Town A-List got everyone on the dance floor after dinner and decadent favors from French Broad Chocolates were in hand as guests left that evening (can you believe we forgot to grab one!)

This magical wedding, and the results of everyone’s hard work, was captured by Dan & Natalie Watson of Watson Studios.  The guests also had fun during the night in a photo booth from The Photo Blaster and Milestone Pictures saved it all on film (watch the highlight video here)!Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings, Styling by Jennifer Laraia Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios, Cake by Magpies Photos by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings, Styling by Jennifer Laraia Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Watson Studios Photo by Watson Studios, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Watson Studios, Design by Jennifer Laraia, Flowers by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Watson Studios

Beautiful Backyard Wedding

Photos by J. Blessing PhotographySometimes the best location for your wedding is right in your own backyard.  This beautiful bride, her groom, and closest family gathered at their family property for a rustic southern ceremony and reception.  All Occasions Party Rentals set the stage, Whimsical Gatherings added just the right touch of spring flowers and decor, Bradford Catered Events provided the food, The Plaid Apron provided the desserts, Honeybee Events was there to coordinate the day and add a special vintage seating area, and Jennifer Blessing was there to capture all the details.  It was a lovely spring celebration with a perfectly wooded backdrop.  There’s more to share with you soon so please follow our blog and like our Facebook pagePhoto by J. Knoxville Botanical Garden

Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical GatheringsToday we are sharing a sweet and simple wedding ceremony that our Whimsical Gatherings team had the pleasure of working on in March on a Tuesday (yes, a Tuesday!) at the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum.  Tara from Dixie Pixel captured the enchanting details of this gracious couple’s union.  This goes to show that every wedding is magical.  It doesn’t matter what day you tie the knot or if you have 20 guests or 2000, it is always a special occasion!  We love this venue with it’s bricks, vines, and stunning scenery.  We can’t wait to return for another spectacular celebration in September!Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings

A Lovely Luncheon

Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical GatheringsA few months ago, the Whimsical Gatherings team worked with the ladies at the University of Tennessee Foundation on a Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed luncheon at the Hilton Downtown Knoxville.  These photos from Steven Bridges show the mix of white orchids, roses, tulips, and hydrangea that we used to set the stage in tall glass cylinders and crystal beaded vases.  Tiffany blue napkins, ribbon vase wraps, crystal brooches, and petit fours from The Sweetery were then added to enhance the elegant midday look.  Visit and “like” our Facebook page to see more!Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical GatheringsPhoto by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Steven Bridges, Design by Whimsical Gatherings

A Summer Celebration

Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical GatheringsIt’s a beautiful day in East Tennessee!  Even though spring is just starting to bloom, the Whimsical Gatherings team is excited to be preparing for summer events already.  Last summer we spent two weekends at The Reserve at Bluebird Hill.  It’s a lovely venue with amazing gardens, succulent containers, and both indoor & outdoor spaces.  We can’t wait to return again in a few months for another wedding, but today we are flashing back to Holly & Michael’s sweet celebration there last June.  Danielle Evans did a wonderful job capturing the seasonal rustic details of this special day.  B&G Catering, Patrick Michael Wedding Entertainment, and All Occasions Party Rentals were also there creating memories with us for this deserving couple.       Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Danielle Evans, Design by Whimsical Gatherings

Autumn Elegance

Photo by KB PhotographyWe know that spring is approaching but we have a lovely wedding from last October to share with you today.  Catie & Chris’ wedding photographed by Katherine Birkbeck was recently featured on The Lovely Find.  You will love the long flowing veil, the dusty lavender bridesmaid dresses, and the adorable flower girl halo.  Don’t miss the men’s lounge equipped with furniture, vintage sports memorabilia, and a big screen TV – all styled by Jennifer Laraia Designs.  Since the bride & groom are both pharmacists, Jenn also styled a unique vintage apothecary!  We hope you enjoy the Whimsical Gatherings floral arrangements in rustic dough bowls and medicine bottles.  There are many more details to see on our Facebook page too!

We’ve always admired Jennifer Laraia‘s talents when it comes to design and event planning, but a photographer?  She will likely deny her keen eye through the lens, but we had to share a few photos that she took before Catie & Chris’ party got started at The Southern Depot!  Below are additional flower details that Jenn sent us.  Her camera is undoubtedly better than our iPhones!

Party With The Newlyweds

Photo by Adrienne Lampe Photography We’ve never had a couple quite like this!  When we first met with Eric & Mandee, we knew this would be a fun occasion.  The dynamic duo had a small ceremony in Savannah, Georgia and then planned to have a “Party With The Newlyweds” the following weekend at The Knoxville Zoo.   No detail was overlooked in this interactive celebration incorporating the couple’s homemade wine, mad libs, “do not disturb” door signs, a cigar bar, a custom “McTini” cocktail with recipe card, diamond & airplane streamers, a “Test Flight” station to fly airplanes before the couple’s send off, and a memorial table for their loved ones who could not be there.  Eric is an artist himself, so you know he was very involved in the smallest of details, including the creation of an “E&M” wedding logo!  Our stress levels were high the week leading up to this event.  We wanted to deliver more than this couple ever expected and we made sure the right shade of Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year – Tangerine Tango was felt throughout the room by custom ordering the exact paint color for the cake backdrop, the exact paper color for the streamers, and laboring over the perfect floral palette to match!  Bradford Catered Events was also on board to create the perfect menu for these self-labeled “foodies” and Ogle Entertainment & Light Design lit up the tent and stage for the lively band Taboo!  It was such a joy to get to work with everyone involved and it was especially great to work with Adrienne Lampe Photography for the first time.  We struggled to narrow down her photos to share with you today (we started with 163!) but you can view more from this event (including the amazing menu details) on the couple’s blog, on Bradford Catered Events’ blog, and on our Facebook page!

Mint & Gold in Anna Maria, FL

Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings This wedding is such a stunner!  Just look at this Badgley Mischka dress!  When Dixie Pixel announced a free wedding giveaway last year, the Whimsical Gatherings team jumped on board to offer her winning couple $1500 towards a floral & decor package – and here are the results!  After meeting with Anne & Drew, we went to work on gathering and making all of the decor for their gulfside celebration; sequin table overlays, mint napkins, glittery votive candles, metallic gold painted jars, cake pedestals, french urns and frames, succulent cups, ribbons, and coordinating blooms.  Colby & Carrie loaded up the van and headed towards the sand, meeting up with Dixie Pixel to create coastal magic for this adorable family at Roser Memorial Church and The Sandbar Restaurant.  Anna Maria, FL was such a lovely town where we were able to find some locally grown flowers and greenery to add to the centerpieces.   You can see more from this wedding on our Facebook page, on Dixie Pixel’s blog, and featured on 100 Layer Cake!Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Dixie Pixel, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Dixie Pixel

A Speakeasy-Style Awards Dinner

(c) Dixie Pixel Photo, Design by Whimsical Gatherings

The Whimsical Gatherings team recently had the opportunity to design another speakeasy-style evening!  You may remember when we did this for Chris & Kara’s Gatsby-inspired wedding earlier this year.  Well, one of Kara’s Salon Visage clients saw her wonderful images taken by Dixie Pixel and tracked us down to help with this UT Volunteer Leadership Awards Dinner at the Marriott HotelBandit Lites illuminated the room with a cool blue that contrasted the rich floral colors.  The gold lace sequin runners added just the right amount of sparkle and the tarnished brass and free flowing designs lent itself well to the 1920′s feel.  We had a lot of fun working with the girls over at UT Foundation and are super excited to be working with them again soon!

White

Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical GatheringsSometimes less is definitely more!  You can make a huge impact with monochromatic centerpieces and modern floral designs surrounded by candlelight.  Here we created a mix of white arrangements using hydrangea, calla lily, roses, and orchids for the annual Knoxville Area Urban League awards gala at the Knoxville Convention Center.  This year’s event had a throwback suit & tie theme.  The Whimsical Gatherings team kept things clean using glass containers and candlesticks.  This allowed the flowers to stand out and the professional lighting to create a lovely atmosphere in the room.  With the flip of a switch (or turn of a dial), you can use the lighting to change the mood from dinner to dancing!

A Lovely Cedar Springs Ceremony

Photo by Jennifer Crook, Design by Whimsical GatheringsSuch a lovely bride and such a beautiful day!  This Whimsical Gatherings ceremony took place in August at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville.  The lush magnolia trees, tall building columns, and brick walls provided such wonderful backdrops to these photos taken by Jennifer Crook.  Caitlin & Bo’s sweet East Tennessee wedding was followed by a lively reception at The Foundry.   You can view more of this couple’s special day on Jennifer Crook’s blog or also on the Whimsical Gatherings Facebook page.

Old Hollywood Halloween

Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical GatheringsYou’re in for a real treat this week!  You may have seen this event recently published in Occasions Magazine, but we have many more details to share with you today after impatiently keeping these under wraps for nearly a year!  In fact, this may be the largest blog post we’ve ever put together.  So if you enjoy Halloween as much as we do, we have an interview below from the party host, Deborah Franklin, and we’ve posted over 200 photos from this event on the Whimsical GatheringsFacebook page so you can find inspiration for your own holiday soiree!

Deborah Franklin was one of our most memorable clients, no doubt.  When she enlisted us to create an over-the-top Halloween birthday party for her, we were thrilled to have this project to work on.  Almost everything you see here was done in-house by the Whimsical Gatherings team.  All of the graphics and most of the spooky decor was pieced together over several months to create the perfect scene for Deb’s Old Hollywood Dead Celebrity theme.  We had many of our favorite vendor friends help out on this too;  Ogle Entertainment and Ambiance Light Design (lighting), Holly’s Eventful Dining (catering), Rita’s Bakery (petit fours), and Grim Limos (hearse) were just a few.  All of the magic was captured by Jennie Andrews and we thank her for providing us with so many detailed photos from this celebration!

Deborah was born on Halloween.  She is neither a witch nor a zombie, but she maintains a fearless fascination for all things mystical and magical.  That’s why, for her 40th Birthday, she decided to transform her home into a living morgue of laughter, music and dancing.  Knowing that the right wig could transform the meekest wallflower into a dance-until-dawn diva, she decided to hit the streets of Hollywood for her Halloween inspiration:  The Dead Celebrity Bash.   Below we share with you a few of the birthday girl’s tricks & tips to throwing the Halloween party of your dreams!
Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical GatheringsDescribe your event in a few sentences so someone who did not attend can envision it:

Ghosts.  Ghouls.  Glamour.  Guests stepped out on the red carpet for a fabulous, frightful night immortalizing their favorite dead celebrities.  The dance floor shared the likes of Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, Whitney Houston, Julia Child, Liberace, Anna Nicole Smith, Marilyn Monroe, Steve Irwin, John Belushi, Steve Jobs, Andy Warhol, Freddie Mercury, and multiple Amy Winehouses.  Even an Osama bin Laden and Mother Theresa made an appearance!

What was the most memorable part of your event?

Seeing my guests walk up the red carpeted steps and watching them being bombarded by camera flashes and paparazzi provided by Genna Sellers and Adam Sullivan.  Michelle Carringer was the emcee announcing names as they arrived.  And I knew the party was a success when my guests were calling me from within the house on their cell phones trying to locate me in the crowd.

Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie AndrewsWhat did you serve to your guests?

Holly’s Eventful Dining worked with me to create a spooky presentation of common party foods;  skewered satay beef, blackened shrimp, crab wontons, candied bacon, pigs in a blanket, Asian mushrooms, stuffed jalapenos,  fried pickles, fig & goat cheese profiteroles, chocolate mousse cups, and french macaroons.  Rita’s Bakery created the petit fours and  Whimsical Gatherings created the display signs. Photo by Jennie AndrewsPhotos by Jennie AndrewsWho made your wig?

Stephanie Lindorfer created my Marie Antoinette wig with spider accoutrements.  She worked on it for many months!

If there was one thing you could change, what would it be?

For the first time, I had my costume made for me.  The seamstress was behind and the dress did not arrive until the morning of the party.  The dress weighed about 50 pounds and I had to continuously shed layers throughout the night!Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings

Give some advice to party planners on your “smartest savings”:

I hired college kids to play the role of ghoulish dead and nearly dead props around the house.  They loved dressing up and acting the part.  I paid them $20 for the entire night and they got to take part in the party fun as well!Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical GatheringsComplete this sentence — “Don’t sweat…..”:

Don’t sweat the number of guests that will attend.  I have learned that if you set the tone with an outstanding invitation, guests won’t want to miss your event!  Yes, I still send REAL invitations with specialized stamps (this years’ said “The End” in old Hollywood silent film style).  I do not believe in email invitations.  I want my guests to feel like they just opened the envelop holding Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket.  I want my guests to feel special and get excited about creating their costumes.Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical GatheringsWhat was your biggest “splurge”?

The lighting!  The uplighting done by Olge Entertainment & Ambiance Light Design on both the exterior and interior of the house created the perfect drama as guests arrived.  It escalated this annual party to a dramatic event that everyone would remember.  I also provided a Champagne Bar because nothing says festive like bubbles!  And for the “men folk”, I set up a special Bourbon Tasting Bar with a variety of bourbons for their sipping pleasure.Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical GatheringsWas there entertainment?

When I was planning the flow of the party, I considered each room like a different scene of a play.  Each room had its own sub-theme and actor’s dialogue.  For instance, the dining room was hosted by a straight-from-the-grave Julia Child who reminded folks that she added “just a touch of poison” to make things taste so good!  Julia would then direct guests down the hall into the master bedroom playfully referred to as the “Red Light District”.  Once there, guests were greeted by the most memorable Marilyn Monroe lounging on the bed with a framed JFK looking on.  In the master bath tub, there was an “Ode to Whitney Houston”.  In the library, Tarot Card readings were offered by Tea & Tarot to those who dared.  And outside on the back porch, a neighborhood band called Flying North emulated the Beatles with their tunes and mop tops.  We also had a DJ with dancing and Karaoke as the night carried on into the morning hours.Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical GatheringsDid you DIY any details?

My neighborhood got together about a month ahead of the party to create a short zombie film.  My friend Ryan Flesher produced “For The Children”, which had a cast and crew of fifty neighbors, friends, and family pets including my standard poodle puppy Ribeye.  The film made its premier on the night of the party after all of the guests had arrived.Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Jennie Andrews, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Jennie Andrews Photo by Jennie Andrews, Graphics by Whimsical GatheringsWhat have you learned over the years in planning these parties?  Do you have any basic rules?

1.)  You can never have enough ice.

2)  Empty out the trash one last time 20 minutes before the first guest arrives.

3)  I usually don’t hire a bartender, but I do like to have a couple of “circulators” who can refill beverages, restock the food tables, and keep glasses picked up throughout the evening.

4)  Fake eyelashes and heavy eyeliner are a must for any event being photographed!

Summer at The Reserve at Bluebird Hill

Photo by Sabrina Lafon, Design by Whimsical Gatherings

Though we are quickly heading into fall, we have so much more to share with you from our summer wedding season!  Today we bring you a lovely June wedding at The Reserve at Bluebird Hill photographed by Sabrina Lafon.  The Whimsical Gatherings team spent two weekends in a row at this venue and we never tire of their beautiful landscaping and friendly staff.  This particular wedding had just enough color and detail to highlight the rustic surroundings and coordinate with the gardens.  We used mason jars for floral arrangements and photo displays.  We used tall greenery branches, paper flowers, book page covered votive candles, and burlap for bouquet wraps, runners, curtains, and a banner to help set the scene for a sweet Southern celebration.  There is more to come soon so stay tuned!Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Sabria Lafon, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Sabria Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Sabrina Lafon, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Sabrina Lafon, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Sabrina Lafon, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Sabrina Lafon

An Art Deco Inspired Wedding

Photo by Dixie Pixel, Design by Whimsical GatheringsThis was an extra special event for the Whimsical Gatherings team.  When our Project Manager Carrie planned her own wedding a few years ago, she was looking for a talented singer to perform a few songs at her reception.  She met Aaron Freeman from Pale Root who was getting married the weekend following Carrie’s but was willing to help her with her requests.  Following both weddings, Carrie became a client of Aaron’s wife Megan and her twin sister Kara at Salon Visage.  Kara is the bride you see here and when she posted on Facebook that she had gotten engaged, Carrie could hardly keep herself from bugging and begging to contract her wedding.  She knew Kara had a unique style and after viewing her engagement photos on Dixie Pixel‘s blog (see here), she knew the wedding would be an event that Whimsical Gatherings would add magic to.

Kara is very artistic.  She knows what she wants and she likes to get her hands dirty in projects.  But as many of you know, planning and pulling off a wedding is not a task that the bride herself can (or should) do alone.  So when she and Chris contacted us about their special day, we were almost two steps ahead of them!  It was a joy to work with the couple on their ideas.  We pieced together items that Kara and her mom had collected and added some props and details from the WG studio.  The best part about putting this together was that we could not find photos online to demonstrate exactly what we wanted to do.  From what we could tell, there wasn’t another wedding like this on Pinterest, found on inspiration boards yet, and believe it or not, the plans for this started months before The Great Gatsby movie came out.  We had the vision in our minds though, we listened closely to what Kara communicated about her dreams, and we let the creative process evolve on its own.

As we got closer to the wedding date, we worked with Table Five on putting together a unique mix of speakeasy style linens.  We enlisted Ogle Entertainment & Ambiance Light Design to add an amber glow to The Foundry.  We spent late nights wrestling with metallic fringe and Art Deco wallpaper to create a few backdrops.  We had numerous Facebook conversations, texts, emails, a team outing to see The Great Gatsby to get us in the mood, and a few meetings over margaritas to prepare and exchange goods (Chris was meticulous about packing items in plastic bins and photographing each item next to dollar bills for size comparison so we would not have to unwrap everything.  What a great groom…and likely an experienced eBayer!)  We should also mention that we had a venue change mid-way through the planning, a last-minute hustle to find chalk pens and get a projector working to get chalkboards made, and the groom & groomsmen almost had to wear the wrong suits to the wedding!  Oh wait – we also made TWO bridal bouquets; a light colored one and dark colored one (Kara may not even know this)!  We decided on the dark bouquet and luckily it was the right choice to compliment Kara’s lip color and contrast her gown.

But enough about the background details!  We will let you get to the lovely photos from Dixie Pixel Photography.  Don’t miss the magnificent Jenny Packham bridal gown, the amazing bridal party photo taken at The Oliver Hotel, and the wild burgundy tree peonies.  If you’re itching for more from this event, you can visit Dixie Pixel’s blog post, our Facebook page, and the Green Wedding Shoes’ feature!

June at RT Lodge

Photo by 5Rings PhotoWhen we first met with this bride and her mother about planning a wedding at RT Lodge, we knew that we were in for a treat!  Our Whimsical Gatherings team was excited to design around colorful summer flowers and rustic East Tennessee details for this special day.  Katelyn knew what she wanted.  She thought of all the small details like ceremony fans, vintage place settings, custom signs, lawn games, patio furniture, and a late-night cookie bar.  Her father even built the altar table to match one that Katelyn spotted online!  We became even more excited about this event when we found out that we would be working with Jessi Ringer of 5Rings Photo, Jennie Andrews of Something Borrowed Vintage Rentals, and Dena Kyle of Party Perfections.  This was a lovely day (though very hot!) and a wonderful experience for our team.  For more details from this event, click on a photo below to be taken to our Facebook page!Photo by 5Rings Photo, Designs by Whimsical GatheringsPhoto by 5Rings Photo, Design by Whimsical GatheringsPhoto by 5Rings Photo, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by 5Rings Photo Photo by 5Rings Photo, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by 5Rings Photo, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by 5Rings Photo, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by 5Rings Photo Photo by 5Rings Photo Photo by 5Rings Photo

The Barn & Yallerhammer Pavillion

Photo by Beall + Thomas, Designs by Whimsical GatheringsWe realized the other day that it’s been awhile since our last post!  Time flies when you’re having fun though, right?  Well, our Whimsical Gatherings team has been busy this wedding season having a lot of fun creating for our clients and working with all of our vendor friends.  We are thankful for the opportunity to bring our talents to so many.  We are thankful for our suppliers who have impressed us each week with such beautiful product.  And we are thankful for the work that brings our team together to plan, play, and dream.  There were a few rainy weddings in May and a few blazing hot weddings in June but all of our events turned out beautifully and we can’t wait to share some of the excitement with you soon!

Today we bring you an elegant wedding photographed by Beall + Thomas back in February at Blackberry Farm.  This lovely celebration took place outside at the Yallerhammer Pavillion followed by dinner and dancing in The Barn.  The bride and her mother chose soft spring-like flowers for their gathering.  They were a pleasure to work with and it was a joy for our team to design for this venue again.  Don’t miss the flowers we created for the bride’s hair and charming cake from Magpies Bakery.  As always, you can click on a photo below to view more details.Photos by Beall + Thomas, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photo by Beall + Thomas, Design by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Beall + Thomas, Designs by Whimsical GatheringsPhotos by Beall + Thomas, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings Photos by Beall + Thomas, Designs by Whimsical Gatherings

Carnton Plantation

1 This wedding makes us smile!  We just can’t get over how lovely everything came together and how well Jamie Clayton captured the charm of this June day at Carnton Plantation.  You may have come across the images of Chaz & Caroline’s wedding  in Southern Weddings Magazine Volume 5 and featured in two parts on their blog:  Part 1 & Part 2.  After keeping this sunshine and happiness under wraps until its publication, we finally get to share a few more details with you right here.  Not only did the Whimsical Gatherings team get to create some sweet florals for this event, but details were added by Mr. & Mrs. Wedding and Events and created by the bride herself.  We will let the photos speak for themselves and we hope they also bring a smile to your face!  If you like what you see and want to view more, click on a photo below.

The Show

Leah McCall, Owner and Creative Director of Whimsical Gatherings, is also a fashion design instructor at Tellico Plains High School.  Its Leah’s passion to create and inspire others, yet her students amaze and inspire her each and every day.  Beyond researching designers and developing portfolios, this year’s group of students were especially motivated to create fashion from recycled and redesigned household items.  But that wasn’t all!  They planned to present their creations to the public by means of a runway display called The Show.  Their desire to construct jaw-dropping runway apparel consumed them and their excitement escalated leading up to the event.  There was an energy in the group that Leah had not felt for years.  Their immense creativity turned ordinary lesson plans into something truly magical.  The students got involved in every aspect from collecting materials to modeling their own creations.

Ideas began to run wild in class after a simple conversation about how wasteful society had become and then brainstorming on ideas to bring about awareness through fashion.   Turning trash into treasure was their goal.  The thought that eye-catching couture could only be made from costly fabrics and premium sewing notions was completely rejected.  The supplies needed were right before them.  The first task was to save all of the plastic eating utensils after cafeteria lunch!  With these simple treasures, the first dress was made and as the weeks continued to unfold, the student designers produced garments of paper, magazines, cotton balls, cardboard, garbage bags, tin cans, book papers, and other unusual but common elements.  Anything the students could get their hands on for free, they turned into a garment.  After being submerged into production for weeks, they finished their goal of 40 garments.  At that point it became very clear that the students’ work must be showcased and The Show was born.

Coco Chanel once said, “In order to be irreplaceable one must be different.” and according to Leah, “This class was, without a doubt, irreplaceable.”  The night of The Show, the school was filled with color, light, and a lively crowd.  The process not only transformed simple elements into garments, but also transformed individuals.  A special guest, alumni Colby West, joined the fun by presenting a beautiful design.  Leah and her daughter Madeline also closed out The Show dressed in dramatic handmade dresses.

We are proud to share a few photos from The Show with you today.  If you are inspired by these talented young designers, please leave a comment telling them so!  You can also view more from this event by clicking on the photos below.

A special thanks to those who donated their time and talents to this memorable evening.

The House of WG

A drive into work for the Whimsical Gatherings team means heading towards a unique destination tucked away in the outskirts of Maryville, TN.  We don’t fight for parking or take elevators to get to our office.  In fact, we don’t have offices.  We have room to roam outdoors and a private design space that sits in the center of an 80 acre farm alongside a rolling creek.  When you come through our gate, you may be greeted by a herd of cattle or grumbling turkeys.  You may stop and think you’ve made a wrong turn, but you will be delighted by everything the House of WG soon has to offer.  The rocks crawl in moss from spring rain and prickly thistle sprout in the summer sun.  It is forever changing at the House of WG and forever inspiring us to renew ourselves and our artistic direction.

We consider it a blessing to have a private area to work in and a serene landscape to work around.  We don’t have phones that ring at the studio and our cell phones only get reception at work half of the time.  This lack of typical workplace distraction keeps us lost in our craft.  Week to week we have buckets and coolers to clean, flowers to unpack and arrange, inventory to organize, floors to sweep, and meetings with clients.  We also take time to open doors to let in the wind, plug our ipods in to listen to our favorite music, and it is not uncommon for us to chop down branches, pull thistle, or utilize vines and wild flowers from the property in our designs.

There are times when work has us moving in different directions but the rise of spring reminds us to pool our energies together to prepare for weddings and summer gatherings.  We will be busy over the next couple of months and it will be hard to track us down.  Jude may be working on marketing materials or delivering floral arrangements while Colby is picking up flower shipments or gathering branches from the woods.  Leah may be teaching fashion design students or placing product orders while Carrie meets with clients or conducts site visits.  We look forward to working with so many great people this year, traveling and designing at different locations, and sharing our work with others.  Amazing projects and plans are underway at the House of WG and we hope to bring inspiration to others in ways that so many things have inspired us.Whimsical GatheringsWhimsical GatheringsWhimsical GatheringsWhimsical GatheringsWG farm Collage New Filter For additional views of our workspace, you can click through some of our previously posted albums.  Just as the seasons change and inspiration around our studio evolves, our front room changes with the paths that creativity leads us to.  You will see different versions of the House of WG through these links and since our studio is like a second home, there are some shoots that are especially close to our hearts.

A Southern Depot Wedding

Whimsical Gatherings was delighted to start 2013 with this beautiful wedding at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and The Southern Depot in downtown Knoxville.  The bride and her family were a joy to work with and this January day turned out to be filled with sunshine and temperatures nearing 70 degrees.  We enjoyed creating the flowers and decor for this wedding and had a ball working with Table Five Linens, All Occasions Party Rentals, Magpies Bakery, Erin Wilson (baker), and Katie from Pearls and TwirlsA.K. Behind the Scenes

Wow, 2013 is going to be an amazing year!  We’ve been busy working with 2013 brides to fine tune their decor plans, designing for corporate events, and gathering professional photos to share with you from 2012.  Our team has literally been working around the clock to make this one of best years yet for Whimsical Gatherings!

To make room for whats to come, we’ve updated our Behind the Scenes 2012 album on our Facebook page and started one for 2013.  We don’t always stop to capture our own work, but these are fun if you’d like to see whats been in our cooler, how we package our personal flowers, get a glimpse at some events that aren’t photographed by professionals, and sometimes even see members of our team in action!  We update these albums every couple of months so keep an eye out for future additions!

Public Market

Photo by John Black, Design by Whimsical Gatherings

The Whimsical Gatherings team is flashing back again!  This time, we’re sharing photos from 2011 when we had a uniquely designed booth at a public market.  With all of the holiday shopping underway, we thought of this time and the photos by John Black Photography were simply too sweet not to share!  Many of the items we sold were from our large inventory of event decor; mercury glass vases, frames, candles, and ribbons.

Will we ever have a market or retail presence again?  We never say “never again”!  To view more from our booth, click on the photos below!

Rehearsal Dinner

With the University of Tennessee football season wrapped up and now focused on finding a new head coach, we thought about this Whimsical Gatherings rehearsal dinner held a few years ago at Neyland Stadium.  These photos by Dixie Pixel show what an amazing view the stadium has and also showcases the unique use of a colorfully patterned linen to enhance the table arrangements.  To view more, click on a photo below.

Holiday Dinner Tables

When we were asked to assist RT Lodge with a fall/winter photo shoot, we were thrilled at the chance to work with Alexandra Hansen, The Happy Envelope, and Waldorf Photographic Art!  The Whimsical Gatherings team grabbed some props, greenery, scarves, trophies, flowers, moss, and branches to create some festive tablescapes. We’ve been hanging onto these photos for awhile and thought this would be the perfect time to share.  To see more from this shoot, click on the photos below or check out Waldorf’s post for more details.

Behind The Scenes

It’s been awhile since we’ve shared some of our amateur iphone behind the scenes photos with you!  The Whimsical Gatherings team has been busy the past few months with weddings at some amazing venues; Smithview Pavilion, Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, Butterfly Gap Retreat, Holston Hills Country Club, a newly renovated warehouse in Downtown Knoxville, and a lodge in Gatlinburg.  We’ve also worked hard to create a Chanel inspired 8th birthday party for one lucky girl,  a modern Halloween party for a super fun client, and a fabulous Gala at the Knoxville Convention Center.  There’s more to come soon!  We have weddings and events all throughout the fall and winter months so stay tuned.  In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this peek into what we’ve been working on.  To see more, click on the photos below to be taken to the complete album.

The Reserve at Bluebird Hill

The Whimsical Gatherings team was so excited to finally design a wedding at The Reserve at Bluebird Hill this past July!  This property has gorgeous landscaping and amazing places to add decor; an outdoor ceremony pergola, an outdoor seating area with a fireplace, and a super cute dressing area for the bride.  We can’t wait to return to this venue next year for one of our 2013 brides and get the chance to work with Jan & Lauren again!  We hope you enjoy the photos captured by Jennie Andrews Photography.  This couple was a ton of fun and not the first time we’ve worked with this family as the bride’s sister was a 2011 Whimsical Gatherings client!  To see more from this special day, check out Jennie’s full blog post or click on a photo below to be taken to our Facebook album.

Butterfly Gap Retreat in September

September was Whimsical Gatherings’ busiest month this year!  We had so much fun creating beautiful, bright, bold, and unique decor for several events and celebrations.  This wedding at Butterfly Gap Retreat was one of our favorites featuring a mix of East TN and India influences.  The day turned out beautiful for the outdoor ceremony on Butterfly Gap Retreat’s lakeside peninsula and the indoor/outdoor reception in their studio.  The setting complemented the rustic and modern decor incorporating iris, coxcomb, pincushion protea, calla lily, safflower, pomegranates, craspedia, and bittersweet vine.  To view more photos from this event captured by Sullivan Photography, simply click on a photo below to be taken to our full Facebook album.

The Whimsical Gatherings team is excited to bring you Part 2 of this August Blackberry Farm wedding today photographed by Watson-Studios.  We received so many amazing photos to share that we decided to create two blogs posts!  We hope you enjoy the beautiful floral arrangements that we placed in handmade barn wood boxes and the sweet bouquets utilizing hydrangea, stock, scented geranium, ranunculus and a variety of dahlia and roses.  Don’t miss the bride’s stunning Vera Wang gown, the airy Bill Levkoff bridesmaids’ dresses, the tent draping by All Occasions Party Rentals and the breathtaking scenery of Blackberry Farm.  To see more photos from this event, view Part 1 of this blog, click on the photos below, or head to Watson-Studios blog for the full feature.

Fall Foyer

The first day of Fall, or the Autumnal Equinox, was on September 22nd.  In honor of this, we’re sharing some photos from a corporate event that we designed for last year at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum.  We hope the vibrant colors and warm textures inspire you to gather items to decorate your home for the new season and upcoming holidays!  You can create an amazing tablescape similar to this design with moss, bittersweet vine, grapevine balls, colorful hydrangea, and purple or orange calla lilies!  For more holiday decorating ideas, visit Whimsical Gatherings’ Facebook page and click through our photo albums!

The Foundry – On The Fair Site

The Whimsical Gatherings team had a wonderful time working with this couple and their families on a warm wedding weekend in August!  Caroline Fontenot captured the beautiful ceremony held at Church Street United Methodist followed by a lively reception at The Foundry in downtown Knoxville, TN.  The decor had a vintage feel with bright summery colors and hints of burlap and lace.  You don’t want to miss the sweet icing details created by Heather from Cake of Knoxville too!  To view more floral photos from this event, simply click on the photos below and visit Caroline Fontenot’s blog for even more wedding fun!

Butterfly Gap in July

The Whimsical Gatherings team did it again with this lovely wedding!  Just wait until you see all of the details that the bride helped us create at Butterfly Gap Retreat in July.  She provided the adorable boutonnieres for the men and we created the beautiful vintage-inspired bouquets.  She provided some of the vintage props and signs and we added our touch with vintage books, mismatched bottles with flowers, apothecary terrariums, and tall book page branches on the tables.  To compliment Butterfly Gap’s gorgeous indoor ceremony Pavilion, we used just a hint of baby’s breath to tie in the vintage feel.  And don’t miss the cakes by Rosa’s Catering!  We added just a touch of color to one of her super sweet creations.  If you want to see more, simply click on the photos to be taken to the full Facebook album.

RT Lodge in May

We really enjoy weddings at RT Lodge!  The staff is always wonderful to work with and the property offers some amazing backdrops for beautiful events and memorable photos.  Luckily on this wedding day in May, the threat of rain passed and the couple was able to enjoy their outdoor ceremony and tented reception.  Their black & white color scheme was highlighted with hints of purple flowers and gorgeous lighting provided by Ogle Entertainment and Ambiance Light Design.  Our Whimsical Gatherings team created the corsages, boutonnieres, arbor ceremony backdrop, and reception centerpieces.  As always, if you would like to see more from this event, simply click on a photo to be taken to the full Facebook album!

Blackberry Farm in May

The Whimsical Gatherings team has a sweet treat for you today!  You may have stumbled upon a few of these photos on Style Me Pretty a few weeks ago but today we have a few unseen details of our work from one of our lovely May weddings.  These were taken by the super talented Tec Petaja at Blackberry Farm on a gorgeous summer Saturday.  We were thrilled to have the opportunity to create some amazing details for this wedding including bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, centerpieces, an arbor, a ribbon aisle garland, and even a lace-covered tree!  The bride wore a to-die-for Oscar de la Renta gown, The Modern Hostess created a rustic place card display, and Magpies Bakery created a sweet and classic cake.  If you love what you see here, click on the photos for more!

The Whimsical Gatherings Studio Part 2

We’re updating the Whimsical Gatherings studio once again!  Yes, we seem to go through changes a couple of times each year.  Our team likes to play with ideas and have fun with our front room where we meet with clients and sometimes host small events and classes.  We shared a previous studio design a few months ago that was inspired by the colors of a world map.  The design we share with you today is a clean and crisp summer design featuring white paper flowers and branches handmade and assembled by our team and a group of Tellico Plains High School students.  We have enjoyed walking into work each day with this to greet us for the past few months but we are working on a special project, so things are moving around once again.  Stay tuned for photos of our new look soon!

A Holiday Home Part 4

It’s the last day of July, so today we bring you Part 4 (the last Part) of our “Christmas in July” inspirational posts!  Hopefully you’ve already seen Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, all of which differ in style and color.  Today’s design is a bit nontraditional.  It’s a way to incorporate a few details in to your existing space utilizing colors you may enjoy but may not acquaint with the holiday.  Who says you have to decorate in red & green each year?  Break the rules!  The photos below demonstrate our love of bold bright colors and the use of special elements in separate vignettes.  This provides a welcoming atmosphere for your guests and draws them to different areas of your home.  This not only helps to spread the company, but also spreads the fun and adds a few signature conversation pieces to your party!  See if you can spot the lace-covered lampshades, the glitter-covered craspedia cocktail stirrers, the moss-filled frame, the feather “tree”, and the fabric and ribbon wrapped gift canisters!  Consider these DIY ideas in your holiday planning or put your own twist on something fun and festive!  Enjoy…and Merry Christmas in July to you from the Whimsical Gatherings design team!

Did you enjoy our “Christmas in July” special?  Leave us a note to let us know if you are head over heels or completely abhorrent to the idea of holiday planning this far off.  And what do you think of these detailed photos?  We are so thankful for Amanda from John Black Photography.  This whole particular shoot came about over a glass of wine one night after working a wedding together.  She was just as excited to work on a “Christmas in July” shoot with us as we were with her!  She was so generous to venture out with her camera on a very rainy July day to make this come to life with our team.  Amanda and John are the dynamic duo of wedding, portrait, and commercial photography.  Their studio is located in the beautifully renovated Daylight Building in downtown Knoxville.  They rent out their studio for parties, rehearsal dinners, and small concerts.  Its a gorgeous open space surrounded by windows and tall ceilings.  If you need a modern loft-like space to hold your get-together, give Amanda a call…and contact our team to help you decorate!

A Holiday Home Part 3

Part 1 and Part 2 of our “Christmas in July” inspirational special focused more on larger living room and dining room spaces using traditional design elements.  Today, Part 3 shows a fun DIY design that you can utilize in a small space.  Using extra ornaments or elements from other decorated areas, you can quickly toss together a bit of color and fun in your entry way, laundry room, or even the bathroom as seen here.  With this design, we used leftover wrapping paper and fashioned them into paper flowers.  We took extra tissue paper to make pom poms, covered books with bright yellow paper, and converted old paint chips into hanging ornaments.  Stay tuned because Part 4 will be coming your way tomorrow!

A Holiday Home Part 2

Today we bring you Part 2 of our “Christmas in July” inspirational special.  Part 1 featured illuminating teal, gold, and silver decor but today is a rich traditional red home design!  If you’ve been to your local craft or hobby store, you’ve seen that the holiday aisles are already stocked.  Before you choose how you want to decorate this year, take a look at what we have done here (and in our other posts) to see if there is something you particularly like.  If you don’t enjoy doing this yourself, our team can work with you to create an amazing holiday look in your home using what you have on hand and incorporating some new elements.  We can also custom create fresh floral designs for your holiday soiree or company party.  Stay tuned for Part 3 of our “Christmas in July” posts coming on Tuesday!

A Holiday Home Part 1

Believe it or not, we’ve been working on a few holiday projects this summer.  Our Whimsical Gatherings studio and creative minds have been wrapped around festive and fun decor ideas for both Halloween and Christmas.  Knee deep in glitter, we are!  Seems we are always operating a few months ahead of time with wedding ideas and planning events.  We’ve set up a few different holiday styled shoots and one of the photos from this particular set was recently featured on HGTV.com’s “Christmas in July” feature.  Because of this, we thought we would share a few more photos from this shoot to get you in the holiday mood.  You can’t deny the beautiful illumination and details in some of these photos but if you need help capturing the holiday spirit in your home or business, get in touch!  We can work with what you have and incorporate some new items to liven up your space.  To view more, simply click on the photos below…and have a Merry Christmas in July!
